Maya's new favorite food is raisins!! She also has been feeding food to Rex and she thinks it is so much fun! Maya sleeps on the floor in our bedroom and now when she gets tired she cries a little and takes her sleep-toy (the yellow bunny) and goes to lay down and wait for us to put her to sleep.
I have tried to upload pictures, but the internet connection that we have right now is too slow. We have alot of pictures to show you!

Happy 1st b-day Maya! Mayan ensimmainen syntymapaiva!
HAPPY 1ST B-DAY MAYA July 24, 2007!! It's one day late, but I wasn't able to get to a computer yesterday! I can't believe that Maya is 1!! The time has gone by so fast!
Well, we had a little birthday party for Maya yesterday and had pizza and a cake. We invited 2 of my new co-workers and then 3 new Yu'pik friends of ours. We had a great time! Maya had her first encounter with sugar with the cake and ice cream and she was on a sugar high until 2 am this morning!!! She will not have sugar again for a VERY LONG time!
My first day of work was on Monday and I have been in orientation all week. On Friday I will start shadowing other doctors to learn the cultural differences and just how the clinic runs.
I have met wonderful people and everyone IS truly very nice. I am going to like working here!
Aki is doing well with Maya. Today the weather is sunny and warm and hopefully they have been outside alot today. Maya is finally over her diarrhea. It lasted about 6 days...and a whole BUNCH of diapers changed. We started boiling her drinking water and then the diarrhea stopped. Thank goodness. We are waiting to get our phone working. We will get internet once we move into our rental in August. We should be getting our car in the beginning of next month.
We are doing well. I wish I could post pictures, but it's not possible right now! We miss you all!

Minulla alkoi tyot maanantaina. Olen ollut orientaatiossa koko viikon ja mina perjantain seuraan muita laakareita ja opin tan talon tavat ja myos kultuuri erot. Olen tykanyt olla taalla. Minulla on tosi mukavia tyokavereita ja kaikki ihmiset taalla Bethelissa ovat mukavia.
Mayalla oli ripuli 6 paivaa ja nyt se on ohi kun ruvettiin kiehauttamaan hanen juomaveden. Onneksi se on ohi.
Odotamme etta laitta meidan puhelimne toimimaan. Se pitaisi tapahtua ihan milloin vaan.
Akilla menee hyvin Mayan kanssa. Tanaan on aurinkoinen ja lammin ja toivottavasti ovat olleet paljon pihalla tanaan!

Greetings from Bethel, Alaska..Terveisia Bethel,Alaskasta
Hello to Everyone Reading this!!
We have been in Bethel for 5.5 days or so. Everything is going well. Wow, where to start.
We are living in temporary housing through the Yukon Kuskoquim Health Corporation ("the hospital"). We are in a small 2 bedroom, 1 bath house. It's fine. It's not too nice but it's not horrid, either. We are waiting for phone hookup...it supposidly takes 10 days or so. So by the middle of next week we should have a phone. There is internet at the library,which is located in the cultural center. The library opens at noon.
There are dirt roads and I can just imagine the MUD when it starts raining in the fall! They are supposidly paving the main highway called Chief Eddie Hoffman Highway. The hospital and our temp housing is off of this street.
We have shipped a vehicle to Bethel but it won't get here until the beginning of August so we are WALKING everywhere! Luckily everything is close. The AC (country store that sells just about everything) is about 3/4 mile. We went grocery shopping and were quite shocked AGAIN at the prices! Milk is about $7 a gallon. A gallon of water is over $4. A loaf of whole grain bread costs $4.66. A small can of baby formula, which costs about $12 in Florida is $44 here!! I can see why some women here breastfeed their children to an older age!
We have found a place to live in an area called TUndra Ridge. It is a 3 bedroom/1 bathroom duplex one block from the vast tundra. Our landlord is great and we like him alot. The duplex has a 1500 gallon water tank. That is our water limit for a week. So we will be taking Navy showers for sure! We will be moving into the new place in the middle of next month.
We have all suffered with a stomach virus already. It started with Maya with vomiting and diarrhea, then it went to me and now Aki has it, but only mildly. I was totally out of comission yesterday and on the couch while Aki was changing Maya's NUMEROUS poopie diapers.
But now we are all feeling better.
My work starts on Monday. I have orientation for 2 days and then Wednesday starts the real thing!
The weather here has been sunny and warm (like in the upper 60s) to cold and rainy (50s) like today. We walked to the cultural center for the Saturday Market where they sell vegetables and native eskimo art. Earlier in the week we were planning on buying vegetables from the market, but with the stomach virus, we aren't eating much!
I don't know when we will be able to upload pictures to the blog.
Otherwise all is well. No homesickness but we now see how dependent we are on the internet!! That is what we are having withdrawals from!! We are doing fine without a phone or cellphone. We do have cable TV.. the hospital set that up for us.
Maya is doing well. We noticed that she stopped speaking as much FInnish after we arrived back in the USA. I guess she got confused by hearing a different language again. But now she's saying her few Finnish words again. We are talking to her in Finnish here at our home.

Onneksi meilla on hyvat rattaat Mayalle missa on isot renkaat! Taalla on paljon hiekka teita ja voin kuvitella sita mutaa syksylla!!
Loysimme paritalon alueelta nimelta Tundra Ridge missa on 3mh/1wc. Ihan kiva alue. Tykataan meidan isannoitsiasta. Siina paritalossa on 1500 gallonan vesi tankki mika on meidan viikon kayttoraja. Pitaa sitten ottaa lyhyempia suihkuja!
Meilla kaikilla on jo ollut vatsatauti. Se alkoi Mayassa ja hanelle tuli oksennut ja ripuli. Sitten se tarttui minuun ja eilen illalla, just kun minulla oli vahan parempi olo, se tarttui lievasti Akiin. Onneksi tanaan voimme jo paljon paremmin.
Ilmat taalla ovat olleet niinkuin suomessa. Joskus lampisempaa ja joskun viilempaa. Tanaan on viilea sateinen keli. varmaan vahan yli +10C.
Minulla alkaa tyot maanantaina. Orientaatio on maanantaina ja tiistaina ja sitten oikea tyo alkaa keskiviikkona!
Maya voi hyvin. Huomattiin etta Maya ei puhunut yhta paljon sen jalkeen kun tanne USAan tultiin. Varmaan oli vahan ihmeissaan kun kieli taas muuttui. Mutta nyt ne muutamat sanat mitka Maya tietaa kuuluu taas!

Lake Hood, Alaska
These pictures are from Lake Hood which is the largest seaplane base in the world. There are over 700 seacraft based here and there are an average 190 f;ights daily. This seaplane base is located just a few miles from the Anchorage airport. It is amazing to watch the seaplanes take off and land.
Nama kuvat ovat Lake Hoodista mika on suurin merikoneen "lentokentta" maailmassa. Taalla on yli 700 konetta ja paivasiltaan lahtee noin 190 lentoo. Tama jarvi on vain muutama kilometri Anchoragein lentoasemalta. Oli mahtava katsella kun koneeta nousivat ja laskeutuivat!

Salmon in Downtown Anchorage..Lohta downtown Anchorageissa
THere was a place practically in downtown Anchorage where you could see the huge (likee 20 pounders) salmon run up the river. People were fly fishing but were not allowed to go past a certain point. It was very cool. Aki enjoyed it tremendously!
Downtown Anchorageissa oli paikka missa näkyi paljon lohia..varmaan 10 kg. Ihmiset saivat kalastaa mutta eivät saanut tulla liiän ylös sitä jokea. Tosi siisti katsoa niitä. Aki tykkäsi paljon!

THese pictures are taken from downtown Anchorage yesterday. THe weather was nice enough for us to walk around downtown. There are beautiful flower beds all over Anchorage. There was a Farmers Market and Aki and I ate salmon quesedillas and they were very good! We met a Finnish lady Pia who has owned Pias Scandinavian Sweaters for 30 years. She has been in Anchorage for 40 years. Finns are everywhere!!
Nämä kuvat ovat downtown Anchoargeista. Oli ihan kiva ilma että pääsimme kävelemään ympari downtownia. Siellä on paljon ihania kukkapenkkoja ymprillä. Tapasimme suomalaista Pia kuka omistaa Pian Scandinavian Sweaters. Hän on ollut täällä jo 40 vuotta. Kyllä niitä suomalaisia löytyy joka puolelta!

we are in Anchorage, Alaska
Here is the view from our room at the Aawesome Bed and Breakfast. Everything is going well so far. We just found out that there is temporary housing available for us on Monday. Maya slept last night from 8p to 5am and then we took a family nap from 6.45a to 8.45am. We are heading out to Costco and other shopping today.

Our last day in Florida... Meidan viimeinen paiva Floridassa
We were at the beach by 7am this morning enjoying the cooler weather. Maya was so excited at the beach! She was not afraid AT ALL of the waves!
We will miss all of our friends and family here in Florida! Tomorrow morning we leave for our great Alaskan adventure!
Olimme rannalla jo klo 07.00 tana aamuna. Maya oli niin innoissaan rannasta! Tytto ei pelannyt ollenkaan aaltoja!

Back in the USA..
We are back in the USA!! We arrived into Miami on the 4th of July. There was a horrible thundrstorm that shut down Miami International Airport for about and hour. We circled around Ft. Lauderdale for about 40 minutes and then diverted to Ft Meyers to refuel. We were 3 hours delayed. We were 13 hours in the same plane. Maya did VERY well! She slept alot and didn't cry too much. Rex did well too.
The weather here is HOT and we miss the cool weather of Finland! We have unpacked our bags and have already started repacking for Alaska. We are flying out of Palm Beach at 6am Thursday morning to begin our new adventure! All is well here. Jet lag is hitting us somewhat hard. Maya is sleeping but I am awake at 4am. Maya is feeling much better and her appetite has returned with a vengeance! Yesterday Maya climbed up onto the coffee table for the first time!~!

Lauderdalen paalla varmaan 40min ja sitten lahettivat meidan Floridan lansirannikolla Ft Meyersiin tankkaamaan koska meilla ei ois riittanyt bensaa. Olimme 3 tuntia Miamiin myohassa. Goodbye Finland
We are leaving today, July 3rd from Kajaani and driving to Oulu and from there flying to Helsinki. We will spend the night in Helsinki and our flight leaves very early tomorrow morning. We will arrive in Miami on Wednesday, July4th (Rex's 3rd birthday!). Our vacation went by so quickly! We had a wonderful time and will miss our family and friends tremendously. But we have a new great adventure ahead of us that we are looking forward to!
Lähdemme tänään Kajaanista ajelemaan kohti Oulua ja sitten lentsikalla HKI:in. Yövymme siellä ja aamulla aikasin klähtee kone kohti Amerikkaa. Olemme Miamissa keskiviikko iltapäivänä (Rekun 3 syntymäpäivä!) Lomamme meni tosi nopeasti...Oli tois kiva loma ja tulemme kaipaamaan ystävemme ja sukulaisimme erittäin paljon. Mutta on meillä iso uusi seikkailu edessämme!

We celebrated Maya's first birthday with Aki's family in Kajaani. The other picture is of all the cousins! Elisa, Ville-Veikko, Ada, Anttu and Maya, as well as the 2 furry ones, Tessa and Rex.
