Maya's first English word... Mayan eka enkun sana..

Maya's first English word is " NO!!" She figured out herself how to drink the milk from the bottom of the cereal bowl!! Such a smart girl! She'll make it in the world!

Mayan eka enkun sana on " NO "! Ja Maya itse keksi miten juoda maidot murokupin pohjasta! Niin vaasas tytto! Varmaan parjaa maailmassa!

SNOW!

So much snow! And this is one of the reasons why my trip to a small village about 100 miles north of Bethel has been postponed since Sunday evening. The weather has been poor and the small Cessnas aren't flying. But I would rather be "stuck" in Bethel due to weather than Pilot Station! And especially since I'm leaving on vacation in a week!

Niin paljon lunta! Tama on yksi syy miksi mina en ole paassyt kylaan 160km pohjoiseen Betheleista nimelta Pilot Station hoitamaan potilaita. Ollan yritetty sunnuntaista asti. Mutta saa on huona ja pienet koneet eivat lenna. Olen kylla mielellaan taalla Bethelissa "jumissa" kun Pilot Stationissa....mulla lomaa alkaa viikon paasta!!

We got our snow back... Nyt on lunta taas!

Maya is 18 months old!! Maya on 18kk vanha!

I can't believe that Maya is 18 months old today! I have an 18 month old!! Where has the time gone! She is really starting to copy whatever we do. If we cough, she tries to cough. She sits and watches me get ready for work and I have to put lotion on her cheeks, too, and then she has to go and show her Daddy. We are so blessed to have such a beautiful, HEALTHY, and happy daughter! (We have gotten about 6-8 inches of snow! And the temps are around 26F...PERFECT!!)

Maya on 18 kk vanha tanaan! Mihin tama aika on mennyt!! Maya matkii ihan kaiken nykyaan. Jos me yskitaan, sitten Maya yrittaa yskia. Maya seuraa kun laitan itteni kuntoon aamuisin ja minun pitaa hanenkin poskille laittaa voidetta ja sitten han innoissaaan menee nayttamaan Isille! Me ollaan niin kiitollisia meidan kauniista, TERVEESTA ja ihanasta lapsesta! (Meilla on satanut n. 15cm lunta tanaan ja pakkasta jotain 5 astetta..taydellista!!)

Where's the snow? Mihin lumi meni?

We have had about a week's worth of above freezing temps and this is the result! It's wet and slippery! I wish it would be in the 20's and that we would have some snow...that would be perfect. We have now just under 7 hours of daylight. And the longer day is noticeable.

Here is a picture of Mason. He is still so tiny! Maya was enthralled with the baby. She constantly wanted to touch him and rub his head. She started getting upset and crying when we wouldn't let her touch him! I think she thought that he was a moving baby doll since now she has been so interested in her dolls!
Tassa on Mason vauva. Han on niin pieni! Maya on niin otettu vauvasta. Maya haluisi vaan kosketella ja olla "ai". Maya hermostui kun ei annettu hanen kosketella jatkuvasti vauvaa! Minun mielesta Maya luuli etta Mason on liikkuva nukke kun Maya on ollut niin kiinostunut nukeista lahiaikoina.

Babyshower

Maya and I went to the babyshower of one of my co-workers, Alex. THe little boy Mason was born on Christmas Day and it is more common in the Yup'ik culture to have a shower after the baby is born. Mason has a big sister Brenae who is 3 months younger than Maya. Maya and Brenae are in these pictures together. We had a nice time at the shower!
Kavimme Mayan kanssa "baby shower:eissa" missa lahjoja annettaan tulevalle aitille. Se juhla oli mun tyokaveri Alex:lle. Hanen poika Mason syntyi joulupaivana. Yup'ik kultuurissa annetaan lahjat vauvan syntyman jalkeen eika ennen niinkuin me valkoihoiset. Mason vauvalla on isosisko Brenae ja han on 3 kk nuorempi kun Maya. Maya ja Brenaw ovat naissa kuvissa. Meilla oli hauskaa juhlissa!

Maya was sick last week with a fever and I think a cold. But now she is better and moving all around!

I went to walk Rex this morning in my Jeff King snowsuit and Aki's beaver hat handmade by a yup'ik woman here in Bethel. It's -22F with windchill down to -36F. ANd with all those clothes on I was very comfortable and not cold at all!

Mina kaytin Rekun kavelylla tana aamuna mun lumipuvussa ja Akin majavakarva hatussa! Hattu on kasintehty taalla Bethelissa. Pakkasta on 33 astetta. Tarpeeksi oli vaatetta koska ei paleltanut ollenkaan!

Yesterday the nephews of two of my co-workers came over to play, Dayton is the chubbier of the two and John is the skinnier of the two. THe boys are around 14 months old. They had alot of fun! At first Maya was shy and DID NOT want to share her toys! By the end of the afternoon they were all playing and the tent that Maya got for Christmas was a big hit!

Eilen kavi minun tyo-kavereitten siskonpojat meille leikkimaan. Pojat ovat n. 14kk vanhoja. Dayton on se isompi poika ja John pienempi. Heilla oli hauskaa! Alussa Maya ujosteli ja ei halunnut antaa muut lapset leikkia hanen lelujen kanssa. Mutta loppupaivasta kaikki meni hyvin ja tykkasivat erityisesti Mayan uudesta teltasta minka han sai jouluksi!

Well, Mamma and Pappa made it back to Florida safe and sound. Maya woke up this morning and was asking for her Mamma. I told her that we will be there in about a month. Maya has started playing with dolls! She has 2 dolls that she plays with. THe smaller doll in the picture was given to her for her 1st birthday from her godfather Herkko and we named him Voitto from Alaska. Maya got the bigger doll from Mamma last Christmas and we have named her Martha from Miami. Maya now wants to put diapers on her Martha doll and we constantly have to dress the doll for Maya in her own clothes! This started just about 2 weeks ago. She still plays with trucks, though...
Maya also now can say "Mamma" and "Pappa". She blows kisses, she does "high five". When you ask her how old she is, she will raise her forefinger into the air and want to touch your forefinger (like in ET!). Maya can feed herself with a spoon (a little messily) and drink from a regular cup (again, a little messily). She understands EVERYTHING. You cannot say to her that she will be taking a bath later that evening because she will run to the bathroom and want to take a bath right then and there!
We had a great time with my parents here... Unfortunately the weather has been so cold that we haven't been able to go out to play. Right now it's -18F. But it's supposed to "warm up " to around -4F. Maybe we can go outside this afternoon...

Mamma ja Pappa paasivat kotiin Floridaan turvallisesti ja matka meni hyvin. Maya herasi tana aamuna ja heti kyseli Mammaa! Kerroin Mayalle etta ollaan FLoridassa kuukauden paasta...kylla se aika menee nopeasti!
Maya on ruvennut leikkimaan nukkeilla! Se aloitti varmaan pari viikkoa sitten. Maya sai tuon pienemman nuken kesalla synttarilahjaksi Herkko-kummilta ja Antero kastoi sen nuken Alaskan Voitoksi. Mamma osti Mayalle nuken viime jouluksi ja ma annettiin sille nimeksi Miamin Martta. Maya nyt haluaa etta Martalle laitettaan vaippoja ja vaatteita. Mutta kylla autot ja kelka viela kiinostavat Mayaa...
Maya osaa jo niin paljon! Han osaa sanoa "Mamma" ja "Appa". Maya heittaa pusuja ja kun kysyt hanelta montako vuotta olet han nostaa etu sormen ilmaan ja sitten jonkun pitaa koskettaa Mayan sormea omalla sormella! Maya osaa syottaa ittensa lusikalla (vahan sotkuista touhua) ja myos juoda oikeasta mukista vetta (myos sotkuista hommaa). Maya ymmartaa ihan KAIKKI. Et voi sanoa paivalla etta illalla Maya pitaa kayda "polskun polskun" mutten tytto lahtee juoksulla kohti kylpyhuonetta katsomaan onko ammeessa vetta!
Meilla on ollut aika viileat ilmat. Tanaan on ollut -27C. Toivottavasti iltapaivalla lampiais vahasen etta Maya paasis pihalla kaymaan.

Hei!

Kävimme Hannun kanssa Nokialla ja Tampereella. Olimme Erkin ja Tertun luona kaksi yötä. Vesitilanne ei ole vielä normalisoitunut mutta emme ole sairastuneetkaan, koska emme juoneet johtovettä.

Terveisiä kaikilta kuvissa: Annelta ja Vellulta, Erkiltä, Tertulta ja minulta sekä Hannulta, joka otti kuvia.

Toivottavasti Elvi ja Pertti pääsevät hyvin takaisin Floridaan. Mukavaa kevään odotusta...sekä hyviä pullia Mayalle !
