tunnin, ja vaikka aavikolla oli kuuma (lahes 40 astetta) mutta siella oli
myos ihanan rauhallista ja meilla oli tosi hauskaa!

Here's Maya at the airport. I have to keep her on a kiddie leash because the child would otherwise run away from me!! She was playing with a little native girl at the airport. It was so cute! They were running around and interacting very well for the age they were. Maya was calling Pappa in the one picture.

Tassa on Maya lentokentalla. Minun taytyy pitaa valjaat Mayalle (hmmm...kuulostaa tutulta...oisko Aki ollut vahan samanlainen!?!?) muuten neiti lahtis karkuun! Maya leikki yhden pikku tyton kanssa. Oli niin suloista...leikkivat ihan hyvin vaikka molemmat oli aika nuoria. Maya oli soittamassa Papalle siina yhdessa kuvassa.

Maya'a ear surgery went very well. It thankfully was a very short procedure. The doctor did say her ears were in pretty bad shape and that to expect some blood from the ears. She also said that there was such bad chronic infection in Maya's ears that polyps had already formed behind the eardrum. Most came out when she irrigated Maya's ears before putting in the tube. Maya recovered well. Only complained about "owie" to her ears 2 times today. She was completely back to normal within about 1 h 30min after surgery! These pictures were taken at a park in Anchorage 6 hours after surgery. The day was gorgeous! Around 66F.

Mayan korva leikkaus meni todella hyvin. Laakari sanoi etta korvat olivat tosi huonossa kunnossa ja polyyppeja oli jo kasvanut tarykalvon takana kroonisesta korvatulehduksesta. Laakari sai suurimman osan niista poistettu kun han huuhteli niita korvia. Maya toipui erittain hyvin. Maya valitti kipua vaan pari kertaa tanaan. Neiti oli kun normaali itsensa jo 1.5h leikkauksen jalkeen. Nama kuvat oli otettu puistossa Anhoragessa. Paiva oli aivan mahtava. Lamminta varmaan 15C.

For the past week a couple of little birds have been making a nest in the birdfeeder (that we somehow adopted from Laura and Rob!) that is right next to our house!! Hopefully all goes well and they baby birds make it!!

Viime pari viikon aikana kaksi pienta lintua on tehnyt pesan meidan talon viereen! Toivottavasti kaikki menee hyvin ja pikku linnut selviavat!

Mamma bought Maya a Princess inflatable bed from a yard sale in Florida and we tried it out today and Maya likes it! It may be a good idea for us to take on camping trips! In the bottom picture is Maya's new pj's. She is in this phase where she takes all her clothes off and so we have to put a onesie over her pajama bottoms so she can't get her clothes off!!

Mamma osti Mayalle Prinsessa ilmapatja sanky pihamyynisa ja tanaan laitettiin ilmaa siihen. Maya tykkasi kovasti! Mayalle hyva retki sanky!
Alimaisessa kuvassa on meidan neiti yopissa kun han tykkaa heittaa vaatteitta pois yolla. Pitaa laittaa potkuhousujen paalle nappipaita ettei han saa vaatteita pois paalta!

Happy Birthday to Aki's sister Tytti!! Her birthday is May 17th!
Happy birthday also to Anne's cousin and goddaughter Jenna! Jenna's birthday is May 19th!
Maya and I will be going to Anchorage tomorrow for 3 days. Maya will be getting tubes in her ears on Tuesday due to all of the ear infections that she had this winter. AKi and Rex will be home just the two of them...(whatever will they do without us girls!?!) Please keep Maya in your thoughts and prayers this week!

Break-Up Bash

The evening after the river broke up the annual BREAK UP BASH was held down by the river in Bethel! There were free hotdogs and live music! It was the place to be! Aki, Maya Rex and I went. We had a good time! It was still quite windy and chilly but as you can see from the pictures...it was the happening place!!

Seuraavana iltana kun jaat rupsei liikkuu, Bethel piti jaanlahto juhlat! Tarjoilla oli hodareita ja musikkia. Menimme koko perhe ja kuten naatte kuvista, oli paljon muita ja hauskaa oli!

Break-up

The Kuskokwim River broke up Tuesday morning May 13th at 8:48am!! What an exciting day! People were emailing pictures of the river all day onto the hospital's email! Now boating season has begun! A few of my patients have come in to Bethel from the closer villages by boat. I had a 10 year old boy who had symptoms of appendicitis in a village called Oscarville that does not have a runway and villagers from there can only get to Bethel by snowmachine in the winter and by boat in the summer. The boy got sick on Monday before breakup but the health aides heard that someone had made it by boat from Oscarville to Bethel and back earlier that day. So the parents put their 10 year old in the boat (with possible appendicitis) and boated him less than 10 miles to Bethel ER. THat's the way of life here!!

Yksi 10 v poijalla oli maha kipee ja luultiin etta hanella oli umpilisakkeen tulehdus. Siina kylassa missa han asuu ei ole lentokenttaa ja paasee sielta Betheliin hoitoon talvella moottorikelkan kautta tai kesalla veneella. Poika sairastui maanantaina ennekun joen jaat rupsei liikkumaan mutta pojan vanhemmat kuuli etta joku paasi heidan kylasta Oscarvillesta Betheliin ja takaisin samana paivana. Vanhemmat laittoivat pojan veneeseen ja eikun kohti Bethelia. (Ja poitsulla maha kipee) Semmoista se on taalla Bethelissa pain. Tassa on kuvia Kuskokwim Joesta/

Bethel Regional High School Prom 2008

Well, last night was prom night here in Bethel. It's quite the big deal, as getting yourself organized for prom where there isn't a Dillards or any sort of dress shop or a Claires for jewelry is quite the challenge. The kids, I heard, order alot through the internet or travel to Anchorage to go dress shopping. The interesting thing here is that there is something called the "Grand March" where couples get introduced and the entire community is invited to come and see all the juniors and seniors all decked out in their beautiful clothes. THen all the community members get kicked out and the students get to have their prom. It brought back a bunch of memories...(from ..gulp..around 15 years ago when I went to prom!) The entryway into our Yupik Cultural Center was FILLED with people waiting in line to get in to see the kids. It was a great time!
Viime iltana oli lukiolaisten tanssit. Taalla Bethelissa on ertilaista kun sukulaiset ja tutut voivat tulla katsomaan kun oppilaat esitellaan ja kaikki nakee hanen ihanat asut. Sitten kaikki vieraat heitetaan pihalle ja nuoret paasee juhlimaan omia tansseja. Toi nuoruuteni mieleen...kun ite kavin tansseissa jo 15 vuotta sitten!!

Tundra in May... Toukokuinen tundra

THe ice and snow really is melting!! The temps are in the mid 40's these days. THis morning it was drizzling!! Spring is on its way!!

Kylla jaa ja lumi on ihan oikeasti sulaamassa! Tanaan on ollut jo noin 7-8C. Tana aamuna ja sateli vahan vetta! Kevat on tulossa!

The Frozen Kuskokwim River/Jainen Kuskokwim Joki

Here are pictures of our still frozen Kuskokwim RIver. The river where Aki was fishing at was much more south of us. The Last picture is of the timer that is set up for the Ice Classic. In the beginning of APril tickets were sold for $5 each for people to try and guess when the river ice will break up. The timer is set on the bank attached to the triangular thing and when the triangular thing moves due to the ice breaking up, it will trigger the timer to stop. The person who guessed closest wins around $6200 this year! It's a big deal!!

Tassa on kuvia meidan jaisesta Kuskokwim joesta. Taalla Bethelissa on kisa nimelta Ice Classic missa ihmiset maksoi $5 saada arvata milloin jaat rupee lahtee joesta. Siina alimaisessa kuvassa on se kolmijalka mika on sidottu kellon rannalla. Kun jaat liikkuu naru vetaa sen kellon ja aika seisoo. Ihminen kuka osaa arvata parhaiten tana vuonna voittaa yli $6200! Bethelissa tama on iso juttu!

Frozen tundra.. Jainen tundra

Aki was in Quinhagak this weekend fishing with 3 of his buddies. They flew from Bethel and the flight lasted about 40min. They left Saturday morning and got back Sunday evening. They had a great time. In one of these pictures you can see the ice highway that many of my patients drive in order to make it to their appointments.

Aki oli Quinhagak nimisessa kylassa kalalla 3 ystavien kanssa. Lensivat eilen aamulle 40 minuttia etelaan pain Quinhagakiin. Tulivat takaisin sunnuntai iltana. Heilla oli hauskaa. Yhdessa kuvassa nakyy meidan jaa moottoritie. SIta kautta monet potilaat tulee klinikalle vastaanotolle.
